Pumpkin Ale

Though summer is my favourite season, there are two special things I like about autumn: Major League Baseball playoffs and the fact many breweries release their seasonal pumpkin ales.

While my beloved Blue Jays are out for a 17th straight year, at least one Toronto brewery, Great Lakes, is at bat once again with their Pumpkin Ale. Its body is a deep orange-copper colour. It has the flavour and aroma of sweet pumpkin with hints of cinnamon and spice. The finish is balanced with a slight bitterness. Good pumpkin ales like this are a special treat around Canadian Thanksgiving and Halloween. My personal favourite pumpkin ale is a seasonal brew available at the Olde Stone brew pub in Peterborough, Ontario, if you’re ever by there in the autumn. A single bottle of the Great Lakes version will cost you $4.95 at your local LCBO for a 650 ml bottle, which is 5.5% ABV.
