Lava Smoked Imperial Stout

The Grid’s Ultimate Winter Two-Four inspired me to try one particular beer. It’s an Icelandic beer called Lava Smoked Imperial Stout. I cannot say I’m a fan.

Lava pours thick and black with a surprisingly small head for a stout. Paul Longhurst, a regular reader of this blog, set me up for the let down. His analysis was perfect. The beer tastes like liquid barbecue spare ribs. The aroma has hints of sweetness, but is very smoky. The taste on the palate is very smoky and has a malty finish with a hint of sugar. It tastes like barbecue sauce. Lava had promise, but comes up a complete disappointment.

Also, don’t drink this like a Coors Light. In fact, at 9.4% ABV it’s more than twice as strong as a Coors Light. The cost is $5.80 for a 500 ml bottle at the LCBO.
