Fire in the Rye

I tried this beer the other day and was hesitant at first as I’ve had bad experiences of rye pale ales (Rye PA’s as they’re often called).  But the hoppiness of this beer was quite balanced and I enjoyed it.

Fire in the Rye is brewed by Double Trouble Brewing in Guelph. I haven’t been to Guelph in years but am thinking of taking a road trip there this summer just to see all the microbreweries. Of course, someone else will drive.

At first look Fire in the Rye might be a root beer. it’s a medium brown colour with a lot of carbonation and a thick off-white head. The aroma is very hoppy, but with some hints of caramel sweetness. The flavour has a lingering bitter finish but the taste balanced very nicely with heavy hoppiness balanced by slight caramel sweetness. This beer is not a sugary root beer, it just has sweet malts balancing the flavour.
