Shawinigan Handshake

This is not a joke or parody. It’s a real beer brewed by Quebec’s Le Trou Du Diable. It’s a strong ale at 6.5% ABV and as the label says, brewed “with the approval of the little guy from Shawinigan, the Right Honourable Jean Chretien.” The label also claims the beer “reflects the sharp sense of humour of this legendary politcal figure.”  Yeah, Chretien was pretty funny. I admit I voted for him and liked him.

The beer itself is more like a weisse, or rather, a blanc to me. It pours a deep and opaque yellow  with a very thick white head. The aroma is citrus-like, with hints of banana. The flavour is clean, but hoppy with hints of spruce and citrus, with an equally hoppy finish that mellows into a sweet banana/peach flavour. Very nice. I was a fan of the little  guy from Shawinigan and I’m a fan of his beer.
