Upper Canada Dark Ale

Upper Canada beer has been widely available in Ontario since the days when I wasn’t old enough to drink , but still did anyway (not gonna say it was right or wrong, just gonna say it happened). The beer is currently brewed by Sapporo, via Sleeman.

As I try this beer tonight for the first time in at least a long time, it strikes me as a mass-produced attempt at a craft beer. The ruby-brown body and thick tan head are very nice, but the aroma is weak with hints of caramel. The flavour is of sweet molasses and malt, but not strong enough. I have to take several sips to describe it. The beer does finish quite nicely, though bitterly, with roasted malt. The beer lacks a lot of body, but for a “discount brand” at the Beer Store, you can do a lot worse.
