Southern Tier India Pale Ale

A review of a strong (7.3% ABV)  Yank craft beer from Lakewood, NY’s Southern Tier Brewing Company.  Lakewood is in western New York, next to Jamestown (Home of 10,000 Maniacs), just north of the Pennsylvania border. (Yes, I had to check Google Maps.)

The beer pours with a thick white head and an amber body with a reddish tint. The aroma is strong, but nice with spices and hops and a bit of pine. The flavour has hoppiness, but a good balance with malts. The finish is very strong and hoppy, but nice. It’s hard to make an IPA this strong and not have a strong alcohol flavour to go with it. What a good beer.

Speaking of New York State, I should take the time to offer thoughts and condolences here to the victims of Hurricane Sandy in the US and Canada. I was a little inconvenienced by losing power here in Toronto for most of Monday night into Tuesday morning, but in the grand scheme of things, I have nothing to complain about.
