Is Bud Light Platinum irresponsible?

Anheuser-Busch has a new beer on the way to the U.S. market called Bud Light Platinum, according to the Los Angeles Times. It is not really a light beer at six percent, but has slightly less calories than regular Bud. It apparently “appeals to a key group of beer drinkers and expands consumer occasions,” according to someone at Anheuser-Busch. The Times article also suggests, via Todd Alstrom of Beer Advocate it may be a faux-spirit-infused beer such as beer with the taste of vodka or tequila. (Remember the ad for the Smirnoff Rocket suggesting a mixture of half a beer and half a Smirnoff Ice? I’ve met many people who actually tried to buy this only to find out this was not an actual pre-packaged drink that existed.)

I have to wonder if this is irresponsible on the part on Anheuser-Busch. This drink has panty-remover all over it. I don’t have exact numbers or statistics here. I don’t know if beer companies keep statistics for the underage demographic. But I know a major demographic for the high-alcohol beer is young people. They lack money and want to get, er, better bang for their buck. I also know if you put a coolerlike low-calorie beer on the market, it’s going to be marketed to women, young women in particular whose bodies are going to (most likely, depending on her size) not be able to withstand a six percent beer as well as the boys.

I would try Bud Light Platinum once to see what it is like (not scheduled to come to Canada anytime soon). But I’m also worried about this drink becoming the Ladies’ Malt Liquor. Then again, I guess for several years they’ve had those sweet high-alcohol coolers for Meathead Stu to buy for Stacey while he fantasizes of taking off her skinny jeans at the end of the night.
